From Two Sliders to One Open Wall: An Eagle Ridge, Coquitlam Transformation

In the Eagle Ridge neighbourhood of Coquitlam, right on the Port Moody border, this family had a great backyard: a stone patio, mature trees and a lawn big enough for a soccer net. The problem was getting to it.

Where we started

The back wall had two small sliding doors with a section of wall between them. A slider is built from one fixed panel and one moving panel, so even fully open, each door only gave you about half of an already narrow opening. The rest was glass to walk around and wall to look past. The backyard was right there, but the house was closed off from it.

A team effort

The homeowners wanted more daylight, more fresh air and a living space that opened to the backyard. Getting there took the whole team working together. The designer set the vision for one open wall. The general contractor reframed it with a new beam to carry a single wide opening. We worked with both of them on the opening size and the details, then built a custom Lexario folding door to fit it exactly. Like every Lexario system, it was fabricated right here in BC, in our Port Coquitlam shop, and installed by our own crew. Made by Canadians, for Canadians.

When the homeowner, designer, builder and door maker are planning together from the start, the opening, the beam and the door come together cleanly, and the result is a better room.

One wall, completely open

Open it up and the panels fold neatly to the side. The kitchen, the living room and the patio become one space.

That's the difference between a door you walk through and a wall that opens. Fresh air moves through the whole room. Summer dinners move outside without anyone having to squeeze past a slider. And you can keep an eye on the yard from the kitchen island.

Even closed, it changes the room

On rainy days, and there are a few of those in Coquitlam, the doors close into a clean wall of glass with slim aluminum frames. Where there used to be two small doors and a solid wall, daylight now comes in across the full width of the room, and the backyard stays in view from the couch.

Why it matters

A renovation like this isn't really about a door. It's about how a home gets used every day. More light, more air and a real connection to the backyard change the way a family lives in the house, in every season.
